Ever been to subway? Well, if you’re the only person in the world that said “no” to that question, I’ll let you in on a not so secret. Subway has a spicy chipotle southwest sauce that is delicious. I’m not proclaiming Subway to be a great sandwich shop, it’s serviceable at best, but their chipotle southwest sauce is killer.
So that was our inspiration when we were creating this spicy chipotle sauce. A smoky, spicy, creamy sauce that goes well with whatever you put it on. For our version we use sour cream and mayo for the base, and we kick up the heat a notch. We add lime juice, lime zest, and salt. It’s almost more of a Mexican crema than anything else.

Storing Spicy Chipotle Southwest Sauce
Store your spicy chipotle southwest sauce in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator. It’ll be good for a week or two.
Don’t freeze it though. Freezing it will affect the texture and the flavor, especially the creamy components. The sour cream and mayonnaise tend to separate after thawing, and the water and ice crystals that form during freezing can also change the texture of the dressing. It can get kinda gross.
How to Use Spicy Chipotle Southwest Sauce
This sauce is super versatile. It can be used on just about anything that will eventually end up in your mouth hole. We love to dip our pizza and chicken nuggets into it. It’s also wonderful on a Cobb or taco salad, we eat way more salads than pizza and nuggets btw…. like totally way more salads…
And of course this sauce is great on sandwiches too, it was inspired by Subway’s spicy southwest sauce after all. I love it on a club or roast beef sandwich. It really makes a cold cut pop!
It’s great on warm crispy tempura fired mushrooms as well. Check out our recipe for a perfect pairing, below.
