Grapefruit salsa is the antidote to the same mundane salsa game. It’s fresh, zesty, and unlike any salsa you’ve had before. For this grapefruit salsa recipe we use the flesh of ruby grapefruits as one of the primary ingredient.
Fresh onion, jalapeños, cilantro, bell pepper, cumin and lime juice help to create a fresh, tangy addition to your salsa rotation. Its supremely addictive with tortilla chips and it pairs perfectly with fish or chicken tacos.

Why Grapefruits?
I feel like grapefruit’s get forgotten sometimes. Reserved only for grandpa’s morning meal with coffee and a crossword. But grapefruits are great for a couple reasons; they’re super healthy, they’re available almost year around, and they have a particularly long shelf life.
Grapefruits are a great source of vitamins C and A, as well as fiber and potassium. They also contain a variety of antioxidants, including lycopene and beta-carotene, which have been associated with reducing the risk of heart disease.
You can’t always get fresh blueberries in January, but you can get fresh grapefruits! And they’ll last a surprising long time. If stored in the refrigerator they can be good for up to 6 weeks. Take that strawberries.

Grapefruit Salsa Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need for this grapefruit salsa recipe.
- Grapefruit: Ruby grapefruits are great bc they are sweet and sour. Red grapefruits are fine too, they may be a little sweeter.
- Bell Pepper: We like to use an orange bell pepper, but you can use whatever color you like.
- Hot Pepper: We use a jalapeño to give it just a little kick, substitute for a serene if you like a spicer salsa.
- Onion: Any are fine, but we prefer the punch of a white onion in this grapefruit salsa.
- Lime Juice: freshly squeezed is best.
- Cilantro: Fresh herbs help to bring this grapefruit salsa alive.
- Spices: Ground Cumin and the standard Salt and Pepper.
How to Make Grapefruit Salsa
Follow these step by step instructions to make this grapefruit salsa recipe.
Step 1: Prep Ingredients
Use a knife or serrated spoon to remove the flesh segments from the grapefruit. Roughly chop the jalapeño, bell pepper, and onion.
Step 2: Combine Ingredients
Add all the ingredients into a food processor and pulse a few times to combine. Don’t over blend, you want a slightly chunky salsa, not a smoothie.
Alternatively, you could finely chop the ingredients and combine everything in a mixing bowl.
Step 3: Sieve & Store
Set a sieve over a large bowl and stain some of the excess juice from the salsa.
Transfer the salsa to an air tight container, we like mason jars, and store in the refrigerator. Let the grapefruit salsa chill for an hour. If stored properly it will last up to a week.

All you need to make this grapefruit salsa is a hit, is to serve it with a bowl of tortilla chips, and maybe some hot sauce. However, its also a great way to finish whatever tacos you’re making. Here are a couple recipes we like to use it with.

Storing Grapefruit Salsa
To store this salsa, keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It’s best to consume grapefruit salsa within 3-4 days, but if stored properly, it’ll keep just fine for over a week.
If you want to make a big batch to have on hand at a later date, you could freeze this grapefruit salsa. Simply transfer the salsa to a freezer-safe air tight container, leaving some room for expansion, and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
When you’re ready to use it, transfer the salsa to the refrigerator and let it thaw overnight. Make sure to give it a good stir before serving.
